First Edition. Octavo (9 1/8 x 5 3/4 inches; 232 x 146 mm). xii, 13-499, [3, blank] pp. With five engraved plates, two of which are folding.

Original quarter blue cloth over drab boards. Original paper spine label, lettered in black. Top edge grey, others uncut. Corners slightly bumped. Top of spine with a small chip at the corner. Paper label rubbed, Some light foxing. Two previous owner's bookplates on front pastedown. A very good copy.

"Captain Fanning of Stonington, Connecticut, sailed for the South Seas in 1792 on a voyage for sealskins. During the next twenty-five years he made voyage to the Pacific and around the world., visiting Australia, the desolate lands of South Georgia, and the islands of Fiji, Tonga, and the Marquesas. He discovered several islands, including one that still bears his name, lying 1200 miles south of Honolulu. Included is an account of the first American naval exploring expedition to the southern hemisphere, 1829-30, sponsored by the U.S. government and commanded by Benjamin Pendleton." (Hill, 581).
