The Rationale of Circulating Numbers. With the Investigations of All the Rules and Peculiar Processes used in that Part of Decimal Arithmetic. To Which are added, Several Curious Mathematical Questions; With Some useful Remarks on Adfected Equations, and the Doctrine of Fluxions. Adapted to the Use of Schools. London: Printed for the Author; and sold by Mr. Murray, 1777.

First edition. Octavo (8 3/16 x 5 inches; 209 x 127 mm). xvi, [2, table of contents], [15]-146, [4, blank], 147-148, [4, blank], 149-215, [3, publisher's ads], [1, errata], [1, blank] pp. With seven folding engraved plates. We could find no copies of this at auction in the past fifty years. According to ESTC " The contents leaf after p.xiv is possibly an insert" thus explaining the lack of pagination.

Contemporary calf, rebacked with original spine. Remnants of a red spine label. Outer hinges repaired. Some rubbing and scuffing to boards. With about eight pages of a previous owners extensive hand-written notes in old ink. Some of these pages are blanks. Previous owner's name on verso of errata in old ink. Old ink notes on back paste-down. A bit of foxing and dampstaining throughout. Overall a very good copy of this scarce item.

"The principle Design then of this Treastise is, to retrench all those Superfluities (as I may call them) which Cunn and others have loaded the Theory of Circulating Decimals with; and to shew, that the while Business depends upon, or may be deduced from, this one single Operation, that finding a finite Vulgar Fraction equivalent to an infinite Repeating Decimal. This being once understood, the Rationale of all the Rules will be obvious; and a Pupil will then go on, not only with Pleasure, but with Speed..." (from the Preface).
