“Condillac [1714-1780] entered into intellectual life at just the juncture when...French thought was, with some little affectation, disowning the legacy of Descartes and adopting that of Newton and Locke. In consequence of the junction between physics and the empiricist account of the mind, epistemology and psychology became virtually the same subject in the French Enlightenment. Condillac contributed to the synthesis more decisively than did any other writer. The development of Condillac’s thought is recorded in a very coherent way in his main works: L’essai sur l’origine des connaisances humaines (1746); Traité des systèmes (1749); Traité des sensations (1754); Traité des animaux (1755); La logique (1780); and La langue des calculs, which was left incomplete and published posthumously” (D.S.B.).

This compact edition of selected works contains Grammaire, Art d’écrire, Dissertation sur l’harmonie du style, Art de raisonner, and Art de penser, which had formed part of the Cours d’etude. The second volume ends with works not included in the Cours d’etude: Logique and Traité des animaux, which the anonymous writer of the preface says have been edited with great care, while the orthography adopted in this edition is that of Condillac himself.
