First edition. Twelvemo (5 x 2 7/8 inches; 128 x 73 mm). Complete with three folding maps, engraved title-page, engraved portrait of Caesar and five full-page woodcuts.

One of the greatest works produced by the Elzeviers. It is described by some as a work that ranks above the Pliny of the same date, the Virgil of the following year and De Imitatione Christii (without date). Willems gives it the highest praise. Ebert calls it "One of the neatest and rarest Elzevier editions, and greatly sought after." Graesse and Brunet give it considerable attention. The first edition may be recognized as having the buffalo's head above the dedication, and pages 149, 335 and 475 misnumbered as 153, 345 and 375.
