First edition in English (the first Spanish edition was issued two years earlier). Folio (15 x 9 7/8 inches). 211 pp. With thirty-six tinted lithographs (including an additional title printed in three colors, two leaves of multiple portraits, a bird’s-eye view of Mexico City, four city views and twenty-eight views of scenes along the railway‘s route). Most of these lithographs are based on photographs and were drawn on stone by A. R. Sanchez, S. Hernandez, F. Poceros, J. Villanasa, and A. Orrelana. Folding lithograph map of Mexico by Iriarte.
Modern quarter brown calf over marbled boards, gilt-stamped spine. Small "Surplus duplicate Library of Congress" stamp on verso of title-page. Some minor purplish staining to the top margin, not affecting text, beginning on page 176-211. Overall, a very good copy of this high spot in Mexican lithography.
This book celebrates, in text and lithography, the installation of the railway system from the capital of Mexico City to the port of Veracruz. “Publication of the Ensayo Historico de Ejercito de Occidente by J. M. Vigil and Juan B. Hijar y Haro in the shop of Cumplido, with extraordinary lithographs by Dionisio Rodriguez..., and the Historia del Ferrocarril Mexicano by Gustavo Paz and Eduardo L. Gallo, with art by Hernandez, Iriarte, F. Poceros, Adolfo R. Sanchez, and A. Orellano from the shop of Lito Llano & Cia., marked a high point [in the development of lithography in Mexico] in 1874” (Mathes).
