“Gaston Leroux (1868-1927), a journalist with a love of opera and the Opera de Paris in particular, based his story on a true incident in which a director at the Opera was struck on the head by the counterweight of a chandelier. Leroux's work was used by Andrew Lloyd-Webber as the basis for his world-famous musical.” (Sotheby's)
