William Marsden was an orientalist and numismatist, who wrote extensively on oriental languages, literature and culture and is best known for his superb work The History of Sumatra published in 1783. This edition of Marco Polo's travels is the first full translation of Ramusio's account of Polo's famous travels. Colonel Yule whose classic translation of Polo's travels is very well known "says that Marsden's edition must always be spoken of with respect, though much elucidatory matter has since come to light" (DNB).
