Original ink and gouache sketch, of Ludwig Bemelman's most beloved and famous character, Madeline. On art paper. Signed "Bemelmans" at an angle below the image. Sketch is in black ink, heightened in blue and red gouache on her hair and hat. Matted framed and glazed in a red metal frame and a double matte of cream and black. Frame size: (14 1/2 x 13 inches, 367 x 330 mm). Image on a larger sheet. Visible sheet size (10 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches; 258 x 222 mm). Full sheet size (12 3/4 x 9 7/8 inches; 325 x 250 mm).Large individual portraits of Madeline are rare on the market. A beautiful image of this endearing character, about fine.
