. "Closeted Up With The Fortune-Teller". Original illustration for "The Vicar of Wakefield" [London: George C. Harrap & Company, 1929].
Original fine pen and ink and watercolor from "The Vicar of Wakefield." Matted, framed and glazed. Watercolor measures (10 3/4 x 7 5/8 inches; 273 x 195 mm), but probably larger under the matt. Frame measures (17 1/2 x 14 1/4 inches; 445 x 362 mm). Signed 'ARackham' on lower right corner. In a gilt frame.
Image is of a young woman having her palm read by an old fortune-teller. There are also black and red playing cards on the lap of the fortune-teller and some spilling on to the floor. The young woman wears a white bonnet and a blue dress and the fortune-teller wears a red skirt, a red and white polka dot blouse and a yellow head scarf. A contemporary sticker for art dealer "Arthur Ackermann & Son inc" on the back of the frame. Overall a very beautiful original painting.
