First edition, only printing. One of 1,000 copies printed. Twelvemo (7 3/8 x 4 7/8 inches; 187 x 123 mm). [4, publisher's ads], [5]-334, [2, blank], [16, publisher's catalogue] pp.

Original greenish blue textured cloth. Spine stamped and lettered in gilt. White wove endpapers. Early owner's gift inscription (Elizabeth Bowditch) on front free endpaper, protected with a later inserted additional blank. Cloth is clean and fresh, gilt shines, and text is uncannily white and clean. This is probably the best surviving copy of this book, the renowned Parson/Slater copy. Housed in a beautiful blue morocco clamshell. Clamshell stamped in gilt with black morocco spine labels.

Twice-Told Tales is a collection of eighteen tales and sketches and the first book to have Hawthorne's name on the title-page. All these tales first appeared in The Token or the New England Magazine, and were assembled and edited by Hawthorne for this collection. 1,000 copies were published in March 1837.
