First edition, second issue, with volume designations added to first page of signatures. Two twelvemo volumes (6 5/8 x 5 1/8 inches; 168 x 130 mm). viii, vii, [1], [9]-380, [2, blank]; [2, blank], xii, [13]-374, [4, blank] pp. With numerous wood-engraved illustrations and maps.
Original blue wavy-grain cloth with covers stamped in blind in a rococo frame with a central gilt lyre. Spine stamped in gilt with Parley figure at base. Yellow endpapers. Spines very lightly sunned. Some minor shelfwear to heads and tails of spines. Previous owner’s ink presentation inscription on front free endpaper and bookplate of F.H. Goodyear on front pastedown of each volume. Bookseller’s description tipped onto front pastedown of Volume I. A fine copy in a brown cloth clamshell case.
This it the extremely rare first edition compiled by Hawthorne and his sister Elizabeth.
