First English edition, published just one month after the first American edition. Inscribed by Wells on half-title "H.G. Wells/Monday May 12 1902". Octavo (7 1/2 x 5 inches; 190 x 130 mm). vii, [1, blank], 342, [2, blank] pp. With twelve plates by Claude Shepperson.
Original publisher's first state blue cloth decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Black coated endpapers. Some very minor shelfwear to spine extremities with a tiny spilt in cloth at the head of the spine. Minor rubbing. Top edge of text block slightly dust-soiled. Chemised and housed in a handsome full blue morocco slipcase with gilt lettering. Overall a near fine copy. Inscribed Wells science fiction novels are rare.
First printed serially in The Strand Magazine (December 1900-August 1901), with many illustrations by Claude Shepperson, twelve of which were reproduced in the first book edition.
The First Men in the Moon was the first of H.G. Wells’s works to be filmed. It was produced in 1919 by J.V. L. Leigh for the Gaumont Film Company.
