Inscribed by Elizabeth Barrett Browning on front free endpaper "With E. B. Barrett's love, to dear Bessy Peyton, Sidmouth November 5th 1833". We have not been able to specifically determine who Bessy Peyton is, however Peyton is the last name of a family who was neighbors to the estate of Hope End where Elizabeth Barrett Browning was raised.
Small octavo (5 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches; 140 x 95 mm). [3]- 156, [4, publisher's ads] pp. With engraved frontispiece and numerous engravings throughout.
Publisher's full blue cloth over limp boards. Small paper spine label, lettered in gilt. Inner hinges reinforced. Overall about fine. Chemised and housed in a blue cloth slipcase. Overall an about fine copy with an excellent association.
Provenance: From the family of Octavius Moulton-Barrett (1824–1910), youngest brother of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, thence by descent.
