First edition. Three large octavo volumes, in sixes (9 3/4 x 6 5/8 inches; 245 x 167 mm. [i-viii], 306; [i-iii],vi, 306; vi, 426. Bound without th dedication page, in volume I, leaf A3. Illustrated with three frontispieces. Two of the frontispieces, 130 woodcuts, and twenty-five initials by Browne; one frontispiece and thirty-eight woodcuts by Cattermole; one woodcut each by S. Williams and Maclise. With all the flaws but two called for in Smith.
Handsomely rebound in late 19th-century half polished tan calf, over tan cloth boards. Spine elaborately stamped in gilt. Spine with red and blue morocco spine labels, lettered in gilt. Top edges gilt. Spines slightly darkened. Some minor rubbing to corners. Page 115 in volume II with a minor stain. Page 179 in volume II with a closed tear in text but with no loss. Overall a very good copy with clean text.
"Master Humphrey's Clock was originally published in 88 weekly numbers, beginning with No. 1 on April 4, 1840, and ending with Nos. 87 and 88 (separately) on November 27, 1841. Every fourth or fifth week the textual portion of the weekly numbers was collected into a single monthly part and distributed in that form. There are 20 monthly parts (April 1840-November 1841), 8 of which consist of 5 weekly numbers each, and 12 of 4 weekly numbers each. After the monthly parts, Master Humphrey's Clock were issued in three volumes... The first volume of Master Humphrey's Clock was published on October 15, 1840; the second April 12/15 1841 and the third December 15, 1841." (Smith)
