Publisher’s green cloth. Spine lettered and ruled in gilt. Uncut. Inner hinges with some repairs. Some offsetting to free endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. Housed in a chemise and quarter green morocco over green cloth slipcase. Previous owner's three bookplates in chemise. Overall a very good, attractive copy.
"Tales of Unrest is a collection of five works of short fiction by Polish-British author Joseph Conrad. Four of the five works were previously published as serials in literary journals before appearing in the volume, published in 1898 by T. Fisher Unwin... All of the works in Tales of Unrest, except 'The Return' were published as serials before being collected in 1898. The name of the literary journal and date appears after each title." (Wikipedia).

Provenance: The book plate in the book on the front pastedown is from Thomas James Wise. Wise was a famous bibliophile and probable book forger who collected the Ashley Library, which is now housed by the British Library. The book plate on the inside back of the chemise is for Bernice and Jack Fein. And The inside front of chemise contains two bookplates from Jean Hersholt. A smaller one states "the Library of Jean Hersholt no. C. 41" and the larger one is also signed in ink by Jean Hersholt. Hersholt is a Danish-American actor, and humanitarian, famous for starring in roles such as the grandfather alongside Shirley Temple in "Heidi." Because of his humanitarian efforts, the Academy Awards created a Governor's award in his honor entitled "The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award" who's purpose is to be "Given to an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry by promoting human welfare and contributing to rectifying inequities." (Oscars dot org). Recipients include Michael J. Fox, Oprah Winfrey, Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor.
