. Service for the Two First Nights of Passover, with an English Translation. New York: L.H. Frank, 1875.

A scarce early American edition of the Seder Hagadah. Octavo (7 3/8 x 4 1/2 inches; 185 x 115 mm). 70, [2] pp. With text in both Hebrew and English. We could only find three copies at libraries on OCLC and one at auction in the past 100 years.

Contemporary brown cloth over marbled paper boards. Minor rubbing to board edges. Front inner hinge cracked but firm. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown and small bookseller ticket to rear pastedown. Some light toning to endpapers from glue. Overall a very good copy.

On the final leaf a note reads: "'Note: On these nights it is customary to allow even the meanest Hebrew servant to sit at table during the ceremonial part: as we were all equally alike in bondage, it is proper that we all return thanks to God for the redemption."

The first Haggadah of Passover published in America was published in New York by S.H. Jackson in 1837, with an English translation by David Levi of London. "Henry Frank printed his first New York haggadah in 1850. The popularity of his edition and the growing Jewish population of the United States led Frank to reprint the Passover liturgy numerous times." His son L.H. Frank took over subsequent publications, such as the present copy.
