First edition. Small quarto (7 3/8 x 5 3/8 inches; 187 x 137). [8], 188, 185-203, 200-204, [204], 210-218, [2] leaves. Title-page within a decorative woodcut border, supplied here in facsimile. With historiated initials and woodcut endpieces. Although there are many mistakes in pagination, this collates complete. Text in black letter. Printers' names and publication date conjectured by STC. The dedication page is an acrostic poem to Christopher Hatton. Only one other copy since 1976 on Rare Book Hub.
Full contemporary calf. Floral central lozenge stamped in blind on both boards. Spine with red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Some minor repairs to outer hinges. Newer endpapers. Boards a bit rubbed and bumped. Early ink ownership signature to dedication leaf. Title-page in facsimile. A few instances of early ink marginalia. Some minor worming and dampstaining to inner margin of a few signatures, not affecting text. Overall a very good copy.
Lloyd was a writer and courtier. "His works suggest that he was highly educated, being able to write in Latin and having a wide range of reference to numerous classical and biblical authorities. A number of Lloyd's early works are dedicated to Sir Christopher Hatton, including one of his most significant efforts, 'The Pilgrimage of Princes' (1573), a long advice book for princes, which is prefaced by an elaborate acrostic poem to Hatton... Most of Lloyd's works are collections of moralistic advice to princes, governors, and courtiers, relying heavily on classical and biblical examples (often the same ones)... The most substantial of his compositions are 'The Pilgrimage of Princes' and 'The Consent of Time."' (Oxford DNB).
