With accompanying description and historical memoranda of character, mode of life, &c. &c. by James Logan...London: Willis and Sotheran, 1857.

Second edition (first published by Ackermann and Co. in 1845-1847). Two folio volumes (14 3/8 x 10 1/4 inches; 365 x 260 mm.). [2], 4, xii, [170]; [iii]-xiv, [180] pp. Two hand-colored lithographed frontispiece depicting the arms of the clans, by Mary Filmore, School of Design, and Mrs. O’Hea, School of Design, after J. Logan, and seventy-two hand-colored lithographed plates by Louis Dickinson, W. Kinnebrook, and others, after McIan. Text separately numbered for each clan. Bound without the lithographed dedication leaf in Volume I.

Publisher’s full red morocco, elaborately stamped and lettered in gilt with the Scottish royal arms in gilt as a central device. All edges gilt. Spines stamped and lettered in gilt. Spines darkened. Repairs to outer hinges. A few plates with minor soiling. Two with light damptaining to bottom margin (Drummond & Macpherson). Some plates with evidence of removal and mounting, with adhesive residue to blank rectos. A few leaves and plates with a small bit of marginal worming, but hole never touches illustration. Overall, a very good set.

The artist, Robert Ronald (1803-1856) belonged to a clan illustrated here, the McIans or Macdonalds of Glencoe, Argyllshire. and the Logans, respectively.
