A photo album of 66 photos showing the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. Each photo measures 5 x 7 inches. With an additional larger photo laid in measuring 6 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches. The first photo in the album is of Eaton's Bazaar, and the loose photo is of Eaton's with a Sunset magazine display showing magazines where the cover reads "Two years later, April 1908." Most of the photos have the location identified and a consecutive number written within the bottom of the image in white or black ink.
Album is an oblong octavo (7 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches; 175 x 270 mm). Full morocco stamped limp paper boards. Boards double-ruled in blind. Leaves of the album are black paper and photos are mounted on recto and verso of each leaf. There are seventeen blank leaves at the end of the album. Some wear and rubbing to boards. But leaves and photos are in very good condition.
Some of the destroyed locations in the images include St. Ignatius Church, many view of City Hall and it's dome, Masonic Temple Geary Street, Mercantile Library, Holy Cross Church, Hall of Justice, Mission Delores, Jewish Synagogue Sutter Street, Hibernia Bank, Center of San Francisco seen from Stockton and Pine Streets, Hales Market and 6th Streets, From the Flood Building, W.H. Crocker Building among others.
"On April 18, 1906 San Francisco was near totally destroyed by a great earthquake and an ensuing devastating fire. What occurred during the "Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire" was beyond the experience or imagination of the people living in 1906. San Francisco and the surrounding area had experienced large earthquakes in the years 1838, 1865, and 1868, but those events were nothing like the destructive power of the magnitude 7.9 earthquake that ruptured nearly 270 miles of the then little understood San Andreas fault."
