First edition. Five octavo volumes (9 x 5 5/8 inches; 226 x 145 mm). xvi, 504; xii, 518, [1, errata], [1, blank]; xiv, 523; x, 518; xii, 456 pp. With a frontispiece portrait in each volume. Additionally, a folding map in volume I, volume II with a folding map and a single page map, volume III with an engraved plate, volume IV with an engraved plate and volume V with a second frontispiece of Mt. Vernon.
Uniformly bound by the Harcourt Bindery in half red morocco over marbled boards. Morocco double-ruled in gilt. Spine elaborately stamped and lettered in gilt. Spines with inlay of blue and tan morocco to create a stars and stripes shield. Top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Silk page markers. Some minimal foxing and toning, mainly to the preliminaries of volume II. Overall a near fine set.
Originally meant to be a three volume set (as stated on the title-pages of volumes I and II), Irving realized while writing the third volume that the work would end up being larger in order to accurately portray Washington's efforts during the Revolutionary War. This is the complete five volume set all in first edition, published between 1855 and 1859.
