Contemporary drab boards. Pages uncut. Some minimal foxing and toning. A bit of light wear to board edges and along spine. A small ink numerical note to front board. Front free endpaper with previous owner's inscription. Overall a very good copy.
?A collection of 134 rhymes divided into four parts. The editor of the first two parts, which were published in 1784, was the literary antiquarian Joseph Ritson. Parts III and IV, here first published, contain many additional rhymes, collected by Francis Douce and others. The book is curious in that it is unillustrated and apparently for adults? (Opie).
Contains the first printed appearance of ?Humpty Dumpty? (p. 36: ?Humpty Dumpty sate on a wall/Humpti dumpti had a great fall;/Threescore men and threescore more,/Cannot place Humpty dumpty as he was before.?); ?Little Bo-Peep? (p. 39: ?Little Bo-peep has lost her sheep?); and ?The Jolly Tester? (p. 40: ?I love sixpence, a jolly, jolly sixpence?).
