The First Dated, Separately Printed Illustrated Edition in English
Sleeping Beauty in the Wood.
Nottingham: N.p., 1796.
Full Description:
[PERRAULT, Charles]. Sleeping Beauty in the Wood; A Tale. [Nottingham: N.p.], 1796.
The first dated, separately printed illustrated edition in English. Twelvemo (6 3/4 x 4 inches; 175 x 100 mm.). One sheet folded to make 24 pp. Woodcut illustration on first and last page. Bottom of title page reads: ?Printed in the year, 1796? Leaf uncut.
22 pages on one single folded sheet but uncut, with woodcut on title page and woodcut and vignette on page [24]. Pages [1] and [24] serve as wrappers.
Another issue of this work has the words: Plant, sculpt. following the date. Plant recorded as printer variously in Nottingham Macclesfield and Litchfield but his dates are unclear. A few versions are noted in ESTC, with an estimated date of 1790, however they are all undated.
Self-wrappers with some edge crumbling (due to wrapper binding). A bit of toning to paper. A tear to the crease along top edge of first page. The folding is slightly askew. Overall, a remarkably good copy in light of its fragility.
Perrault?s fairy tales were first collected together and published in 1697. The continuing popularity of these tales is attested to by the large number of editions that have appeared since that time in many languages. Among the most well-known of Perrault?s tales are Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Blue Beard, Cinderella, and Puss in Boots.
