First edition, first state, without the publisher’s gold acorn device on the spine. Small octavo (7 5/16 x 5 inches; 185 x 125 mm). [8], 400, [1], [3, blank] pp. Illustrated title-page by Fred J. Arting.
Original dark red cloth with front cover ruled in blind and lettered in gilt. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Minimal wear to extremities, some rubbing to covers. Gilt lettering on front cover bright. Some very occasional minor marginal soiling. Overall, a near fine copy. In the original exceptionally rare color pictorial dust jacket by Fred J. Arting (jacket with expert restoration to extremities and folds, some light soiling on panels.) Housed in quarter green morocco clamshell case.
“Tarzan of the Apes is the third story Burroughs wrote, but is the first hardback book Burroughs published. This is the first appearance of the Lord of the Jungle in hardback” (Zeuschner).

BURROUGHS, Edgar Rice (1875-1950]. Typed Letter Signed. Tarzana: September 15, 1948. A pleasant note to Mr. Vernell Corriell, thanking him for his kind wishes regarding Burroughs’ recent birthday. On Burroughs’ personal stationery, one quarto page, signed by Burroughs in blue ink. Usual fold lines, else fine. Burroughs was ill at this time, and his signature is a bit shaky.

BURROUGHS, Edgar Rice (1875-1950]. Typed Letter Signed by Burroughs’ secretary, Mildred Bernard. Tarzana: April 27, 1949. Again, on Burroughs’ personal stationery, one quarto page, signed by Bernard in green ink. Usual fold lines, else fine. With typed mailing envelope. Of particular interest is that this letter is addressed to Samuel A. Peeples (1917-1997) a well-known writer/producer who worked for many television shows, including the original Star Trek series (having written the second pilot episode, Where No Man Has Gone Before.) This letter, written on Burroughs’ behalf, states that Burroughs is ill, but still thanks Peeples for his letter stating that Burroughs was an inspiration to him, and that Burroughs wishes Peeples success.
