[6], 249, [1, blank], [1, printer’s device], [1, blank] pp. Bound without the initial blank leaf. Twenty-two full-page illustrations. With the original publisher's red cloth bound in at the back. The cloth is with the first issue flaked white ink.

Bound by Bayntun in full red levant morocco. Gilt-rule border on covers. Front cover stamped in gilt with an elephant and a palm tree. Spine decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt in compartments. Gilt board edges and turn-ins. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Some minor finger smudging. A small closed repaired tear to contents page, not affecting text. A near fine copy.

“These twelve stories with an equal number of poems, written ‘for little children’, were drawn from the store of ‘make believe’ tales that Kipling told to his own children. All of the stories but one [“How the Alphabet Was Made”] had appeared in periodicals between 1897 and 1902, but none of the verses had been published before 1902” (Stewart). This book has the distinction of being the only one illustrated by Kipling.
